In January 2026, the European Commission formally adopted the amendment to the Nitrates Directive concerning RENURE, acknowledging certain circular fertilisers as synthetic fertiliser alternatives. This has a significant impact on regions with intensive livestock farming, such as Flanders in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In this regard, Inagro has carried out several field trials in recent years to assess the impact of RENURE. The results of these studies demonstrate that RENURE fertilisers can perform comparably to synthetic mineral fertilisers in several crops.

On top of that, the economic viability of RENURE in Flanders depends largely on the farm’s structure and scale, manure availability, existing infrastructure, and regional regulations. Nevertheless, investing in the technology for producing RENURE-fertilisers on-farm have become more interesting now that RENURE has been acknowledged as synthetic fertiliser alternatives.

ReNu2Cycle partner Inagro wrote an article on their field trials and earlier economic analysis on the impact of the RENURE legislation on farmers. This article will be published in the July edition of Open Access Government.

Although some bottlenecks and challenges remain, Inagro believes that the adoption of RENURE fertilisers in Flanders might boost production, as well as use, and might be a significant step towards a more sustainable nutrient management.
