During the first half of the project, the ReNu2Cycle partners have blended, prototyped and demonstrated recycling derived fertilisers (RDF) on farms in Ireland, Belgium, Germany and Luxemburg. The goal was and is to assess their suitability for adoption by farmers in the North West Europe region: RDF blends were identified and applied for demonstration on the working farms, followed by an agro-economical assessment.
What did we learn so far from the different regions about the different types of RDFs, the impact of RDF blending, the types of application for these RDFs, the availability of RDFs, etc?
ReNu2Cycle organises a (free) webinar on Thursday 13 November to present and discuss the results of the RDF application and demonstration halfway the project. They team up with the partners of the bioSoilutions project, a research project that focusses on blends of bio-waste derived soil improvers.
Agenda
1. The application of recycling derived fertilisers
Led by Prof Achim Schmalenberger, University of Limerick – 45 minutes
- Lessons learned from the demonstration sites (Belgium, Ireland, Saarland, Lower Saxony)
- Q&A on the demonstration: what did we learn about liquid fertilisation, about the different types of applications, about blending, etc?
2. What are the major bottlenecks for adopting RDFs?
Led by Prof Annmarie Ryan, University of Limerick – 30 minutes
Through a living lab approach, participants give their ideas to understand what the bottlenecks are for adopting RDFs and their marketisation. Topics addressed will be availability, reliability and legislation.
3. Presentation of the BioSoilutions project
Led by Rajpal Shetty (PhD), University of Ghent - 20 minutes
- Project overview and main objective
- Rationale behind the production of blended soil improvers (frass- and struvite-based formulations)
- Preliminary validation results – laboratory and field insights
- Conclusion – key takeaways and next steps

Join us to learn about circular fertilisers.
This is the first webinar in a series of three webinars co-organised by the ReNu2Cycle project, as part of their mid-term event. Webinar 2 is on aligning policy to practices and innovation and webinar 3 is on the LCA of RDF blends. These webinars are supported by the ESNI Community, part of the Biorefine Cluster Europe.
BioSoilutions has been funded by the European Union’s funding Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon Europe. ReNu2Cycle is co-funded by Interreg North West Europe.
